I had the fortune of visiting Stone Quarry Art Park in December of 2021 at the invitation of Sarah and Emily; Conservators of the Hilltop House and Studio. At the crest of the rolling grassy hills of Cazenovia, NY, stood a small A-Frame studio and an almost unassuming home building. Just across the threshold of the home is when I realized this was no ordinary space. Built by artist Dorothy Riester and her husband Bob, the home was a close and quiet hug. I’d never felt so instantly at-home in a place I’d never been. Here, you could feel Dorothy’s appreciation for the world around her letting light and landscape inspire her work with found materials and bold colors. It was mid-century modern, which of course, I love - but it was also so much more. It was as if the entire house was a living breathing piece of art that expanded and grew with their needs. The rules were ignored, and the result was heavenly.

While I hope you can experience the magic of Stone Quarry Art Park and the Hilltop House and Studio for yourselves, I know that isn’t necessarily a reality. For now, support the Art Park with an all-season view catcher inspired by the House and Studio. Simply hold the view catcher up to a window and imagine.

Hilltop House Plant Room | The plant room connects the home’s original structure with the library expansion. With tall bright skylights, bare earth, and plants growing up each wall - this little room is where every New Yorker dreams of escaping during the long cold winter. A plant lover’s paradise.

Hilltop House Living Room | Cool flagstone reaching across the floor pick up colors from the bright blue ceiling beams and the bright blue sky beyond. A long stretch of windows opens the room towards the adjacent grassy knoll and forest. A hand sculpted fireplace, built in furnishings, paintings and sculptures; this is the place to be.

A-Frame Art Studio | There is no doubt that I love an A-Frame anything. An A-Frame reserved solely for creating and sharing art? I can think of nothing I love more. Windows on either end of the studio open up to the beautiful and well-loved Art Park. Inside, a bright red door welcomes you home.
